How to Stir an Above Ground Tank

No matter what type of effluent storage you have, it needs to be stirred thoroughly. But how do you stir an above ground tank? Nevada has made this even easier with an electric over-the-wall effluent pond stirrer, the Nevada TankStir 710.
There have been attempts by various farmers to stir above ground tanks with water and jet support. In theory it seems like an adequate approach to stirring, but the reality is the practice is not effective with effluent stirring.

When using the jet method, it only stirs the bottom of the above ground tank and not the top. Jets can get blocked and a high volume pump, that uses a lot of electrical power is required to operate the jets.

Over-The-Wall Effluent Stirrers for Above Ground Tanks

The best approach to stir an above-ground tank is with an over-the-wall stirrer. A more thorough stir is achieved because the stirrer can be positioned far enough into the tank and angled for the best flow. This allows the stirrer to easily break up crust from the top (should you have any) as well as bringing sediment up from the bottom of the tank up into suspension.

Electric over-the-wall stirring options

Nevada offers two robust options for electric over-the-wall stirring: the Nevada TankStir 710 (pictured right), which is purpose built for above-ground tanks, and the versatile Pedestal Mount. The Pedestal option allows you to securely mount an electric effluent such as the Nevada EL7, giving it the reach and stability to perform powerful mixing right into the tank. Both options are designed to break up crust and suspend sediment helping to ensure the storage capacity you require in order to remain compliant.

PTO over-the-wall stirring options

If power is limited or unavailable to the tank, there is the option of using a PTO stirrer. The PTO stirrer can be mounted to the front-end loader of the tractor and be driven hydraulically. Keep in mind, a 100-120 horsepower tractor is needed to operate a PTO stirrer, as the weight is significant when being transported from one location to another. Nevada offers a conversion kit for a PTO stirrer; to make it into a hydraulic drive to ensure the stirrer reaches over the wall of the tank.

Typhoon™ Propeller

All of our effluent pond stirrers are equipped with the Nevada Typhoon™ propeller. This 3-blades propeller creates a vortex circular motion that propels the solids into suspension and mixes it in with the liquids to create a richer mix for spreading. Stirring dairy effluent thoroughly lowers the need and costs of synthetic fertilisers.

Whether implementing an electric or a PTO over-the-wall effluent stirrer. Both options can assist in utilising effluent that is already available as a resource on the farm, lowering overall costs and ensuring operations are running more efficiently.
